There is growing evidence that enjoying the countryside has positive benefits for mental and physical health.ÌýHere at the NFU, we recognise andÌýcontinue to actively promote these wellbeing benefitsÌýand their link to the countryside and farmed landscapes.Ìý

During the pandemic we sawÌýaÌý34%ÌýincreaseÌýin peopleÌývisiting the countryside andÌýappreciating the role farming plays in creating that environment.ÌýConnecting people with rural areas on their doorstep that they may never have visited before can have a long-term legacy of greater appreciation, valuing and use of the countryside, as well as boosting health and wellbeing.ÌýÌý

ThroughÌýa celebration of theÌýcountryside,ÌýweÌýwanted to also grow an appreciation for British farmingÌýby bringing people close to where their food comes from, and better understand the role British farmers play in protectingÌýand enhancingÌýour much-loved rural areas and beauty spots.Ìý

As part of the Levelling up rural Britain campaignÌýthis is a priority for the NFU all year round, but during July we stepped up our efforts to coincide with the school summer holidays.ÌýÌý

TheÌýCountryside CodeÌý

  • 5,000ÌýWhat’s growing in my field?Ìýsigns wereÌýmade availableÌýto membersÌýinÌýJulyÌýand areÌýstillÌýavailable to download.ÌýTheseÌýsigns allowedÌýthe public to connect with the farmedÌýlandscape,ÌýandÌýgainÌýaÌýgreaterÌýunderstanding and respect of whatÌýfarmers do to create and maintain the farmed landscape.Ìý
  • We teamed up withÌýÌýtoÌýcelebrate the beauty of the countryside andÌýremind dog owners to keep their dog on a lead, especially around livestock. This message was seen by 816,000 people.Ìý
  • WeÌýreiterated the Countryside Code throughÌýa range of images and videosÌýon our social media channels, as a chance to educateÌývisitors, both experienced and new,Ìýwho were enjoying the countryside.Ìý

The CompetitionÌý

  • We launched aÌýÌýin conjunction withÌýFarmStayÌýtoÌýcelebrate the wellbeing benefits of the farmed landscape and everything British farmers do to shape it.ÌýÌý
  • We asked forÌýphotosÌýof people in the countryside, making sure that farmland was included, and to tell us what the place or people in the picture mean toÌýthem. The prize wasÌý£1,000 towards a farm stay as well as a hamper of British Food.Ìý
  • The competition receivedÌýnearly 1,500Ìýentries,ÌýwithÌýourÌýÌýsharingÌýtheir camping holiday in AberystwythÌýandÌýhowÌýthe countryside has helped their mental health.ÌýÌý

The SurveyÌý

  • We surveyed more than 2,000 British people who live outside of rural areas across England and Wales, to better understandÌýthe link between wellbeing and the countryside.ÌýÌý
  • 87% said that visits to Britain’s farmed landscape had improved their wellbeing.ÌýÌý
  • 84% agreed their visits had made them appreciate the role farmers play creating our iconic rural landscapes.ÌýÌý
  • We shared the survey results onÌý, which reached 56,000 people. We gained support from theÌýÌýandÌýÌý(Championing the Farming Environment) on social media, who also shared the results.ÌýÌýÌý
