As one of the first steps in the implementation of its , the government is consulting on (as well as homes) off the gas network from the mid-2020s onwards.

It is proposed that all ‘off-gas’ buildings (mostly in rural areas) should progressively replace predominantly oil-fired heating systems with (preferably) electric heat pumps – a policy that will be rolled out to urban areas on gas-fired central heating at a later date.
