ExxonMobil will not be progressing with the CO2 storage in the English Channel and therefore it will not be proceeding with the Solent CO2 pipeline project.

This decision has been made due to ExxonMobil concluding that the necessary government policies and market conditions to support the significant investment required are not currently in place.

• lack of information regarding the project
• scheme route
• health and safety concerns
• pipe depth and corridors
• above ground infrastructure
• environmental mitigation and Biodiversity Net Gain
• consultation with landowners
• impact on agricultural businesses and;
• amount of land taken for the scheme.

Exxon Mobil is anticipating announcing more information in 2024/25, with an additional consultation planned for 2025 that will provide a further opportunity to feedback.

Exxon Mobil is proposing to install an underground pipeline to transport CO2 for permanent storage in the English Channel as part of the CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology in Southern England.

The project aims to decarbonise the site in Fawley and the industrial economy across the Solent region.

Exxon Mobil is consulting on three potential onshore corridors for the pipeline, two across the Isle of Wight and an additional corridor on the mainland.

The proposal includes installing a 60cm diameter steel pipe and installation of above-ground infrastructure.
