The retailer has confirmed it will continue its current poultry feed model, which aims to tackle fluctuations in feed prices and offer some protection to its growers.

Engaging with members

The move from Tesco comes after we held a roundtable meeting with NFU members to discuss the rapidly rising costs of production the industry faces.

The challenges faced by egg producers members discussed at that roundtable continue to feed into discussions with stakeholders across the poultry supply chain.

"British egg producers are facing rapidly rising costs of production. This announcement provides much-needed certainty for those farmers who supply Tesco."

NFU President Minette Batters

NFU President Minette Batters said: “It’s good to see that Tesco is reaffirming its commitment to remain 100% British. At a time when British egg producers are facing rapidly rising costs of production, this announcement provides much-needed certainty for those farmers who supply Tesco and this is something we have been asking for.

“With feed costs representing a large proportion of on-farm production costs, the continuation of its feed model is a positive step. We look forward to working with Tesco on ensuring wider support for producers is in place to account for other increases in costs of production that are being experienced at farm level.”
