»Ê¼Ò»ªÈËhas responded to National Grid’s first non-statutory consultation for the Chesterfield to Willington overhead electricity line.Ìý

This project will consist of a new 60 km, 400kv overhead line, and connect to a new 400kv substation in Chesterfield that is being built by the Brinsworth to High Marnham upgrade.

This project will be a nationally significant infrastructure project, and will therefore require a development consent order. Read our deep dive on the project to get the details.

NFU submits response to first consultation

»Ê¼Ò»ªÈËhas submitted a response to the stage 1 consultation for the National Grid Chesterfield to Willington project, which forms part of the ‘Great Grid Upgrade’ proposing new overhead cables through Derbyshire.

The response highlights key issues such as the scheme route and the undergrounding of cables.

Other matters also raised within the NFU response include:

  • alternative tower types
  • cumulative impact
  • environmental mitigation and biodiversity net gain
  • consultation with landowners
  • impact on agricultural businesses
  • amount of land taken for the scheme
  • NFU engagement.

Next steps

National Grid is anticipating a further statutory consultation in 2025, which the NFU expects will outline the proposed route and further details.

National Grid launches consultation for Chesterfield to Willington overhead line

This stage represents the early development phase, and National Grid is seeking feedback on its early proposals to help shape its plans.

There will also be a secondary (statutory consultation) in due course.

It is essential that affected members provide feedback as early as possible, in order to influence the development of this project.
