British lamb producers now have access to the US market for the first time in more than 20 years. NFU Livestock Board chair Richard Findlay gives his analysis on what this means for the future of British exports.

The deal has allowed British farmers access to a market of more than 300 million people, following the resolution of the ‘small ruminant rule’ which resulted in the ban on British lamb exports.

It has been a long time coming but the hard work from the UK government, AHDB’s trade team, supported by industry, has finally paid off.

Growing potential

The US has one of the highest per capita meat consumption in the world and, with a population of around 300 million consumers, it could present a significant opportunity for our lamb sector.
