Nigel Laws

National Network Manager

“For us all, it’s not just a job, we really believe and see that our work can, and does, make a difference for our members.”

I work in the Network & Subscriptions department and lead the strategic development of the NFU’s local group office network to deliver the NFU’s membership and income targets. I work closely with the regional and NFU Cymru teams providing them with management support and guidance. I am also a key contact with the NFU Mutual on issues affecting the group secretary network including the joint strategic approach to the future structure of the network, leading the recruitment, training, and development processes of group secretaries.

My father was an NFU member, and due to the NFU’s support, he and fellow tenants succeeded in challenging an institutional landlord, achieving a significant positive outcome. That was what attracted me to the NFU. Throughout my 38 years with the NFU, it has always supported me as I progressed from being a Group Secretary through different roles in the regions and HQ. I have been provided with training to build on my skills and experience always encouraged by my managers to pursue my ambitions. I have always found my work rewarding and motivating especially when my work has added significant value to colleagues, members, and the organisation by helping as well as equipping and empowering others to deliver for our members individually and collectively.

ʼһhas respected my choice to stay close to my family, by being flexible in a role that traditionally was based at HQ. They have supported me through good times and bad, recognising and rewarding when appropriate. I believe in seeing a job through which occasionally requires working outside of regular hours. In return the NFU has always been supportive to me if I had a difficulty or situation to deal with and needed some flexibility.

I enjoy working across teams, with different types of people, and seeing colleagues developing and flourishing is really rewarding. Colleagues are always looking out for each other, particularly through challenging times. Working with people who are so passionate about what the NFU stands for is great. For us all, it’s not just a job, we really believe and see that our work can, and does, make a difference for our members.
