Iestyn Pritchard

Head of Operations, NFU Cymru

“Somebody somewhere will have the answer for you, and will go above and beyond to provide more for you, which I think is a very good quality and indicative of the way that we work here.”

I work with the NFU Cymru Team and have particular responsibilities for our membership connection and an overview of the operational side of the organisation. I lead the Network of County Advisers, Group Secretaries and our Membership Adviser across Wales, as they provide day to day services to the members within their local areas. I’m also tasked with managing our support team, who provide much of the organisation’s front line services to members and stakeholders, they facilitate a wide range of internal and external meetings, events and conferences and our flagship event the Royal Welsh Show each summer.

I enjoy the variety the most. With such a broad remit, there’s always something new to do and a wide range of skills required to undertake the work. It’s rewarding when we get answers, or a situation rectified, for members. You feel like you’re part of a team here and there is a vast amount of information and knowledge available to you from the wider NFU team to assist you in your role. Somebody somewhere will have the answer for you, and will go above and beyond to provide more for you, which I think is a very good quality and indicative of the way that we work here.

If you end up in front of a group of people representing the NFU, you can be so well prepared because of the NFU’s wealth of briefings, papers and statistics. We’re very good at relaying information from either the President or DG, if they have met with the government for example, it puts you in a very strong position when talking with members to explain what we’re doing as well as with politicians, and you feel very well informed.

When I started, I received very comprehensive training specific to my role and the organisation were very generous with time and money to get the expertise required. The organisation also provides opportunities for career progression that builds on previous experience. Within the region, the support from HR to develop your skills is great, and the team are very open in you approaching them to request opportunities and happy to invest in the future of colleagues.
